It was in the middle of August 2022, a week before I had to start work after the summer holiday. I wanted to attend a music festival/street festival hosted by RIX FM which is a radio station in Sweden.
But, mostly I went there because of a Netflix Series that was filmed nearby and because of a music festival (and one special artist) I wanted to attend. I can write more about that at a later point.
From my first steps down the winding cobbled streets of Gamla Stan, where the air was filled with the sweet aroma of freshly baked pastries wafting from cozy cafés, to the delightful, solo dining experiences that allowed me to savor local delicacies, I discovered that empowering oneself through travel does not diminish our love for family.
Instead, these moments of exploration and reflection enriched my spirit and ultimately strengthened the bonds with my loved ones back home. Each memory created in the heart of Stockholm was woven into the fabric of who I am, reminding me that taking time for oneself is not only essential but profoundly rejuvenating.
I had left Denmark very nervous and also a bit unsure if this particular trip - but as soon as I lay eyes on the beautiful, old city I was sold. The sun was shining and people were happy.
Exploring Gamla Stan: The Old Town Charm
I lived in Gamla Stan, the historic old town of Stockholm. It’s central and I could walk to the street festival wich was something that was important for me. Stepping into this area was like entering a living museum with its narrow, winding cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and centuries-old architecture that seem to whisper stories of the past. The vibrant hues of the buildings symbolize the rich history and diverse culture of Sweden, creating an inviting atmosphere that beckons travelers to explore every corner. And I love history, I really LOVE history, so this was perfect for me.
As I wandered through the labyrinth of streets, I found myself captivated by the eclectic blend of Renaissance, Baroque, and medieval structures that lined the pathways.
I spent hours at the Royal Palac looking at all the beautiful, historic rooms and learning about their monarchy. The European monarchies are instalments that can be discussed a great deal but I prefer not to start that discussion. But whether you like them or not, one can not claim that the old richness of a European palace is fascinating and for me it brings a lot of thought and a feeling of being greatfull. Because old places remind me of how far we have come when it comes to equal rights - the world still has a long way to go - but it’s much better than only a 100 years ago.
It was clear that this place holds a special significance for both residents and visitors alike. A highlight of my adventure was definately visiting the Royal Palace, an iconic edifice that dominates the skyline of Gamla Stan. As I approached the grand structure, I felt a sense of awe wash over me, knowing that I was stepping into a place that has been central to Swedish royal history for centuries.
The tour inside the palace was as informative as it was impressive; it allowed me to appreciate the rich tapestry of Sweden's history through its ornate rooms and well-preserved artifacts. Walking through these halls, I felt a profound connection to the past—a reminder that embracing our heritage can enrich our understanding of the present and shape our vision for the future. The grandeur of the State Rooms, the intricate details of the Crown Jewels, and the solemn beauty of the Royal Chapel all left a lasting impression.
Each corner of the palace seemed to resonate with echoes of ceremonial grandeur, and I marveled at the royal traditions that continue to define Swedish culture. By the time I departed Gamla Stan, I felt that I had not only embraced the charm of the old town but had also woven a thread of appreciation and respect for the stories that still breathe life into its historic streets.
And I loved the city so much, and felt that there was so much more to explore that I returned in February the next year.
